Oral pain, inflammation and infection has a direct short and long term impact on our canine and feline patients’ lives. You may have heard the simple recommendation of a “dental”, but the term implies performing various procedures important in improving our patients’ oral health, such as comprehensive oral examination, dental radiography, scaling of teeth above and below the gumline, surgical extraction of affected teeth and other abnormal tissue, and polishing. At our practice, we perform dental procedures under general anesthesia in order to prioritize safety and pain management for the patient and accuracy of our work. We also believe in multi-modal pain management before, during, and after the procedure. As one of our considerations in recommending dental care is quality of life, prior to anesthesia, we strive to rule out other medical (or surgical) conditions that are potentially impacting our patients. The decision to pursue dental cleaning and treatment for you pet may seem optional, but in most cases we find that it is a necessary measure at some point in our patients’ lives.
